AN OPEN LETTER TO GIBRALTAR TAXPAYERS
As you receive your 2010 tax bills you will notice that there was an increase of 40% over 2009. An explanation is in order. Over the last decade in a well intentioned effort to keep budgets and taxes low, cash reserves and debt service were used to offset increases to the taxpayers. Continuing this practice the town arrived at a point where there were no longer reserves to apply for levy reductions. This loss of reserves additionally cost the town a reduction in its bond rating. None of these financial decisions were outside of public meetings and were noticed appropriately. This being said, our current town board made the difficult decision to increase the town levy by the needed 40% to rectify the situation and set the town on a healthy economic path. We understand that this comes at a time of economic hardship for all of us but ask for your understanding and encourage your participation in town governance.
